What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is as ancient as the human mind itself. Why? Because it is a natural state of mind.. albeit one that is different from most people’s every day state. If you have ever felt totally absorbed in a book or watching a movie or been driving and realized that you weren’t consciously aware of the last 5 minutes, you have been in a hypnotic state. In this state you are both hyper-focused and more relaxed. When induced in a controlled atmosphere, such as the hypnotherapists office, you will be able to address your subconscious – that 85% of your brain that stores your memories and controls a lot of your actions – in a directed way, allowing you to undo old , no longer valid, patterns of behavior.
The British Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis states:
“In therapy, hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down, and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist.”
These suggestions help people make positive changes within themselves. Long gone are the days when hypnosis was seen as waving watches and controlling people’s minds. In a hypnotherapy session you are always in control and you are not made to do anything. It is generally accepted that all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis. A hypnotist merely helps to facilitate your experience – hypnotherapy is not about being made to do things, in fact it is the opposite, it is about empowerment.
|Once hypnosis is induced you will feel relaxed, but aware. What you communicate is entirely in your control. You will be aware throughout the session and your will be able to remember everything. Sometimes when you return to your everyday state of mind you will find that time has passed either more quickly and less quickly than you thought. Time distortion is a natural byproduct of hypnosis. |You will only be hypnotized if you want to be – you are in control. Your hypnotherapist is only a knowledgeable guide and facilitator. Similarly the effectiveness will depend on your motivation to change. Hypnosis is not a magic bullet. BUT, particularly if you have tried everything else and really want to change, hypnotherapy is an EXCELLENT way to change how you feel, how you think, how you behave and even how your body functions.
